How can I use documentation and manipulation of my environment to transfer personal burdens onto trees? In my body of work, I am focusing on how I can stage outdoor installations to communicate the emotional weight I carry by physically transferring weight onto trees. This physical transfer is shown by pulling down trees, binding branches together, and draping tarps over trees. Over time the trees start to suffer from the weight of each burden. The time and position of each photograph are used to manipulate light; this is shown in my drawings by using pos/neg space and figure/ground relationships. The drawings of these installations are small-scale in order to document each event personally. Leaving the set-ups out after I've finished photographing them also carries importance in my work because I am fascinated by how time can change, warp, and manipulate the installations. For instance, I tied the top of a small tree to a rock in order to force the tree to grow sideways. As time went on, the tree began to grow new leaves and branches even though it had a significant burden. This relates to me because I am still growing and moving forward even though I have weight pulling me down.
