Imperfection - 2022
How does breaking and mending natural objects symbolize my unattainable yearning for perfection? Through the destruction and repair of natural objects, I represent the contradictory relationship between trying to live up to the high standards I set for myself and inevitably breaking myself in the process. To explore this idea, I destroyed natural objects and then crudely taped, stapled, drilled, and sewed them back together. Like the objects, the fixes I make in my life are unsustainable. These remains were drawn in graphite, hand-framed, and organized in modular compositions. My exploration shifted from small to large scale in order to magnify the natural object’s imperfections. By making them physically larger, they enter the viewer's space, forcing them to take notice. As my work furthers, I started creating collagraph monoprints utilizing the mending materials to further highlight the significance of repair. As the ground became more textured and embossed, I had to change my language and value scale into a more dark and textured drawing style. The repetitive nature of printmaking relates back to the repetitive nature of continuously bettering yourself.
